Re: Oil change question on Mercruiser 5.0. Before you drain the oil, loosen the filter just enough to allow air in and no oil to leak out. You can also poke two holes in the filter, one in the middle and one off to the edge. The first method is less messy. In order to get all the oil out, the filter has to drain first.
